Rhineland Pfalz bans Teacher-Student Friendships on Facebook

Facebook has been the bone of contention in several court cases this year. A ruling a few days ago allowed civil servants and public office to have fan pages on Facebook to share updates.

Now the state of Rhineland Pfalz has come in with a new law that bans teachers and students from befriending each other on Facebook siting that being friends on Facebook would destroy any chances of professionalism being maintained. It would be hard for teachers and students to respect one another once they could see each others photos and posts on the social site.

Schleswig-Holstein last year passed a law that stopped teachers from organising school trips and giving out grades through the social site. Baden Württemberg restricts use of social networks at school.

Germany is definitely putting legislation to help protect their children.
