From Electrical Engineer in Stuttgart to Ace Baker in Nairobi

After graduating from the elite University of Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen with a Masters of Engineering in Power Transmission Technology, Caroline Nansubuga-Bredt landed a job at one of the largest utility providers in the country, Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW). Working at EnBW, she would later decide that was not for her and decide to return back home.

In Nairobi, she’s built a cake empire: Caroline’s Cupcakes. In an interview with True Love East Africa, she spoke on the challenges of her switch and how it all started.

My Life Before

I used to be an electrical engineer with a master’s degree in extra high voltage power transmission. After graduating from a German university, I worked for six years for a German utility company planning extra high voltage power transmission networks for the far future. But I wanted to be my own boss, and do something more creative.

How I Started

I started baking and decorating cakes from home. It was just me at first. My f irst clients were friends and neighbours, but in time word of mouth grew the business to such a point that I could employ and train staff.

My Big Idea

After moving back to Nairobi, I decided to put my dreams into action by using my talent in art and baking – skills I had picked up from my mu m. I started experimenting with creating tasty, beautif ul and intricately designed cakes. I always had a vision of exciting those around me with something I had made with my own hands. That just happened to be cake!

My Biggest Challenge

My biggest struggle was getting the message out that I was creating these beautiful and delicious cakes, but also convincing clients that it was worth paying good money for an intricate piece of edible art.

My Life Now

I wake up every morning looking forward to what new challenges my meticulous clients will send my way. A big chunk of my work day is taken up with research to create some of the complicated techniques needed in a cake or sweet creation. My engineering background has really come in handy there! We make exquisite cakes, cupcakes, cookies for birthdays, corporates, weddings and any other celebrations. Our clients trust us and expect a great personalised service without leaving the comfort of their home or office. We also hold baking events and classes for adults and children looking to learn some fun new baking skills.

My Advice

Identify your gift, then take that leap of faith and start. Fear is part of the deal, but don’t let it win. I n the beginning, you will bum p against rocks, but take the bruises as they come and keep going. And never stop learning.
