Two Kenyans and Only One German Among World’s Most Influential People

Merkel as a Substitute teacher

The Times releases a list of 100 most influential people in the world.

What I love most about this year’s list is the number of Kenyans on it. Ory Okolloh and Binyavanga Wainaina, made it to the list, how Lupita missed sijui. Anyhu, Obama also made to the list but that would only count as a half.

Ms Okolloh, a Harvard graduate, is a former Google Africa policy manager and was one of the co-founders of Ushahidi. She is currently the investment director at South Africa-based Omidyar. She’s very instrumental in supporting African entrepreneurs.

Binyavanga Wainaina is a Kenyan literary genius whose books have received backlash and praise in equal measure. Earlier this year, he told the world that he was gay and this bravery is what saw him make it to the Time’s list. (Read: German Embassy Commends Binyavanga’s Coming out).

Germany was only represented by Angela Merkel.

I really want to rub this in but I won’t. So I’ll instead celebrate that this same week a Kenyan was named The Most Beautiful Person by People’s Magazine…..yes ooo, Lupita Nyong’o bagged that title 😉
